Renting vs. Buying in Athens, GA: What the Numbers Actually Say

This question comes up a lot, especially with rents going up all over Athens. Renting feels safer and simpler, but it doesn’t build you anything long term. Buying feels like a bigger step, but it can actually cost about the same each month, depending on the home and the loan.

The biggest difference is what happens to your money. Rent money is gone once you pay it. A mortgage payment, over time, builds equity, which is basically money you get back later. It’s not instant, but after a few years, it adds up in a way renting never will.

Buying isn’t right for everyone, though. If you’re not sure you’ll stay in Athens for at least two or three years, renting might make more sense for now. Moving too soon after buying can eat up any savings from equity in closing costs and fees.
